Senior Control System Engineer

The TECH Group (JTG) within Jacobs Technology provides design and build services for government and commercial clients worldwide. The market areas served are most notably test facilities and scientific facilities. JTG is looking for a Control System Engineering Leader to support projects ranging from small studies to multi-million dollar turn-key supply. The candidate must have an advanced control systems background and the capability to perform control system design and development, but more importantly, the ability to provide self-directed leadership. The leadership skills required include:

  • Communicating with clients regarding technical requirements and capabilities on potential control system projects.
  • Developing system architectural approaches and identifying attributes leading to best value.
  • Writing proposals including cost estimation of labor and material content.
  • Organizing teams to accomplish defined scopes of work.
  • Tracking work progress, looking for risk areas, developing risk mitigation plans, and developing course correction activities when unforeseen events occur.
  • Communicating with clients and senior management regarding status.
  • Coordinating with other engineering discipline and departments to ensure success.
  • Performing lab/shop development, integration, and testing.
  • Performing on-site integration and testing.
  • Performing user personnel training.
  • Supporting operational use issue identification and resolution.

In short, the prospective candidate should be capable of delivering a functional control system from concept through acceptance testing while successfully navigating around project-related obstacles that arise along the way. JTG is renowned for this capability and has the support structure in place to optimize success, but the candidate must bring technical experience, drive, tenacity and excellent communication skills. The technologies employed typically fall within the following areas or similar:

  • Matlab/Simulink control system modeling
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) - typically Rockwell (A-B), Siemens, or GE
  • Motor Drive Systems
  • Motion Control Systems (servos, stepper motors, etc.)

E Essential Functions

  • Must maneuver in and around facility equipment while obtaining field measurements and performing equipment troubleshooting. 15%
  • May bring candidate in proximity of extreme temperature variations, rotating equipment, and high noise levels. 5%
  • Will likely be in proximity of electrical and other hazards. Appropriate PPE must be worn and may include eye protection, hearing protection, and arc flash protection. 5%
  • Work will mainly be performed inside an office or lab environment. 95%
  • Field work may include outside work. 5%
  • Travel will be required to attend customer meetings and perform field work. 10%
  • Work with general office equipment (computers, fax, telephones, copiers, etc) 80%
  • Data Acquisition and Control Devices such as A/Ds, measurement systems, PLCs, etc. 50%
  • Handheld equipment such as digital multimeters and oscilloscopes. 10%
  • Occasional overtime required to meet demanding schedules 15%
  • During field assignments, 2nd and 3rd shift may be necessary 5%
  • Regular attendance is mandatory to meet schedules.
  • Must take and pass a background check and drug screen.

Applicant must have Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with 15+ years of experience in control system design, development, and deployment. Experience must include team lead assignments.
