POSITION SUMMARY:

Work alongside the Safety and Security management team of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Racing Capital of the World. This position requires frequent communications with membership of state, local, and federal public safety agencies for purposes of credentialing IMS events.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Under the leadership of the Director of Safety and Security, this intern position will assist in the credentialing of public safety partners for each major IMS event including the INDYCAR Grand Prix of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400. This constitutes the largest role of the internship.
  • This position is responsible for developing and maintaining outstanding working relationships with all public safety partners and associates at IMS.
  • This position requires frequent communications with membership of state, local, and federal public safety agencies for purposes of credentialing IMS events. The Intern will be required to problem solve during event credentialing hours when public safety membership experience problems at the counter.
  • Responds and communicates daily to credential requests and inquiries, providing a consultative role and analyzing and presenting solutions.
  • Assists with the supervision of temporary staffing working events under Safety and Security; checking on current staffing levels and problem solving.
  • Communicating situational awareness of staffing gaps during events to the Director of Security.
  • Assists with the setup and logistics for public safety meetings and luncheons.
  • Responsible for seasonal projects as assigned by the Director of Security.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Working towards a degree in Emergency Management, Business, Criminal Justice, or Sport Management is preferred, but not required.
  • Must be comfortable in Excel and be able to successfully navigate the SCORE software upon training.
  • High integrity and confidentiality.
  • Team-first outlook, with the ability to build great working relationships with peers.
  • Excellent communication skills with an understanding of professionalism in all interactions.
  • Organizational skills, along with flexibility and the capacity to multitask while under time constraints.
  • Must be able to work all IMS events during the Internship.

WORK HOURS:

The internship begins in late March and concludes at the end of June. This position is flexible with class schedules but does require at least 12 hours a week until the end of the Spring semester. During May, candidate must be able to work long hours and weekends, with several overtime opportunities.

  • Physical demands consist primarily of sitting, standing and walking.
  • Must be able to see and hear in the normal range with or without correction and communicate verbally and in written form with great facility and must be able to be understood.
  • Must have the stamina to work long hours and must be willing to work an irregular schedule, which may include weekends or evenings.
  • Work outdoors requires physical strength and stamina to endure extreme heat, cold, rain and other conditions.
