Powertrain Technician Apprentice

Ilmor Engineering has a successful track record in designing and manufacturing racing engines for the highest levels of motorsport, including Indy Car, MotoGP and Nascar. In recent years the business has been successfully expanding into new markets including mainstream automotive, electric vehicles, aerospace, marine and defence. As a consequence we are now seeking the following people to join our team:

Powertrain Technician Apprentice – Permanent Position

Based in the Test Department, during your training you will spend time in other areas of the business including Power Unit Build, Machine Shop, Inspection and Sub Assembly, giving you the opportunity to learn a wide range of practical skills which will help you during your full time role. You will start by shadowing experienced members of the Ilmor Team, before progressing to being responsible for completing tasks on your own. Ilmor will support college day release and you will be expected to effectively balance your college work with the practical working at Ilmor.

Upon completion of your training, you will become a member of the Power Unit Testing team at Ilmor where your primary tasks will be to rig, test and de-rig race and road power units, operate test rigs, perform test cell maintenance and problem solve. You will work on a range of internal projects as well as external customer projects which could range from Formula 1 to Electric Powertrains. Applicants should have:

  • Qualifications - GCSE’s (or equivalent)
  • Maths – Grade 4 or C or above
  • English Language – Grade 4 or C or above
  • Science, Engineering or Design & Technology – Grade 4 or C or above
  • BTEC & NVQ Level 3 / A Levels preferred
  • Computer literate including Microsoft Office products
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Professional attitude with the ability to multitask
  • Excellent time management
  • Must be eligible to work in the UK In addition, you will be expected to demonstrate the following professional and personal attributes:
  • Good mechanical aptitude
  • Motivated with the capability to use own initiative
  • Attention to detail and quick to learn
  • Be conscientious and able to work effectively as an individual or as a member of a team
  • Work with honesty and integrity at all times
  • Have a clean tidy approach to your work
