Job Title:                             Mechanical Engineer 6-month Fixed Term Contract

Function:                             Mechanical Engineering

Reporting to:                       Ken Haines  -Head of Mechanical Engineering

Background

Taking decades of expertise from advanced telemetry, data-driven performance optimisation and virtual product development, join us on a journey like no other. We are creating products inspired by motorsport to provide enhancements to the world around us.

Our Mechanical Engineering teams deliver feasible, data-led solutions and have the capability to provide input across all McLaren Applied engineering programmes. Our multi-disciplinary teams adopt an open and inquisitive mindset, eager to explore and solve engineering challenges. We apply world-leading cutting-edge engineering tools, techniques and processes ranging from novel insight generation techniques, concept creation, detailed design and verification through to product delivery.

Our teams’ value is realised through a number of key strengths, including mechanical simulation-driven optimisation; advanced 3D modelling and visualisation; high-performance materials expertise; prototyping and performance validation testing; and design excellence for production.

Purpose of the Role

  • Support the Mechanical Engineering design on a single project in the field of vehicle simulation.
  • Working remotely, with some on-site work with our team in the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking.
  • Standard working hours, 40-hour week, Monday to Friday.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Mechanical engineering design and development on a simulator motion platform project.
  • Efficiently carry out mechanical design tasks which have been prioritised by the project leadership team.
  • Create 3D detailed CAD models in Siemens NX, sharing these with the project technical lead and wider project team.
  • Proactively seek relevant design information and historical design knowledge from experts across McLaren, including McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive.
  • Design and create test rigs to explore design performance.
  • Support the creation of design verification test plans and support the execution of tests.
  • Gather and interpret test results, iterating engineering designs as needed.
  • Create designs suitable for manufacture, sourcing and liaising with manufacturing partners.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum BEng Mechanical Engineering degree, or equivalent technical degree.
  • Experience of and comfortable with creating concept designs when requirements are undefined, partially known or fluctuate.
  • Experience of adding mechanical detail to high-level concept designs, transforming design visions into feasible engineering designs.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD solid modelling ideally using Siemens NX, with some Class A surface modelling competency desirable but not essential.
  • Some knowledge of structural finite element analysis, ideally using Altair Hyperworks Suite.
  • Familiar with BS8888:2011, or equivalent, for the generation and checking of engineering drawings.
  • Experience of taking designs through to manufacture, with full consideration of DfX at the design stage including tolerance stack analyses.
  • Skilled at writing design documentation to a high standard, with the ability to deliver impactful presentations with confidence to internal and external audiences.
  • Strong technical ability.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Self-starter, able to work autonomously under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Identify technical issues and take a proactive approach to addressing them.
  • Collaborative approach with others, thinking creatively and sharing openly to produce workable ideas and novel solutions.
