Mechanical Design Engineer

A fantastic opportunity has become available for engaged and innovative Mechanical Design Engineers in the Mechanical Design group.

Reporting to one of the Lead Mechanical Design Engineers you will create and deliver ‘Right First Time’ engineering solutions that make a tangible contribution to the team success.     

You will work collaboratively as part of a small design group, applying your thoughtful and curious nature to a range of stimulating challenges to meet the increasing demand and requirements across a range of disciplines. Our focus is the Formula One Team but this role will also offer exposure to Applied Science, where we leverage the best motorsport technologies for our customers across the domains of land, sea, and air.

 

Key responsibilities/Duties:

  • Take technical ownership of a variety of projects on the car’s suspension, steering and brake systems, encompassing both metallic and composite design, from design through testing and implementation on the race car to the highest standards.

  • Working in synergy with other engineering departments, i.e.: Applied Science, you will work on a variety of challenging non-F1 projects, such as America’s Cup boat design, producing optimised designs solutions to achieve the highest levels of performance and reliability.

  • Generating 3D models, Assemblies and 2D drawings including defining and documenting manufacturing information.

  • Support in the definition and management of performance & reliability lab testing programs for relevant designs & projects.

  • Reliability management of assigned systems throughout component life cycle and in support of the team’s reliability function.

  • Close collaboration with internal and external manufacturing departments to ensure fully integrated designs that achieve optimal car performance.

  • Understand and drive cost effective design solutions.

You have an open and curios mind, a creative approach to engineering problems and are keen to develop yourself further in a demanding role.

Capable of working on your own and applying your reflective nature to understand a problem your open and honest communication style means you also relish collaborating in a team setting to deliver effective cross departmental integration and results

With a broad overview of your subject, you enjoy discussing technical concepts and finding solutions to problems by applying your interpretive skills, attention to details and dependable judgment.

 

Essential skills and experience:

  • Mechanical, automotive or aeronautical degree (2:1 minimum grade) or similar.

  • Proven in-depth understanding of mechanical design and its application with a solid first principles understanding, materials and manufacturing techniques.

  • Experience of Catia V5/3DX solid modelling and surfacing design package would be beneficial.

  • Use of finite element analysis tools (ideally with Catia V5/3DX package) and hand calculation methodologies to produce reliable and optimised designs is a significant benefit.
