Mechanic

FULL JOB DESCRIPTION:

Dale Coyne Racing is an American professional open-wheel racing team that currently competes in the IndyCar Series. The team was founded in 1984 and is owned by former driver Dale Coyne. After the 1988 season, Coyne stepped out of the cockpit and turned his talents to the tutelage of several up-and-coming drivers.  From 1995 to 2000, the team was known as Payton-Coyne Racing, reflecting a partnership with Chicago Bears great Walter Payton.

We currently have multiple positions available for a full-time traveling Mechanic based in Plainfield, IL. The candidate may also be required to participate in pit stops.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for necessary adjustments to the car.
  • Disassemble, clean and perform non-destructive inspection of suspension components.
  • Ensure all car components are safely joined, bolted or otherwise secured.
  • Modify manufactured precision parts for the car using manual machinery to exactly fit set-up and design specifications.
  • Meet specified deadlines for race car preparation.
  • Load the race car, tools, and spare parts on the transporters.
  • Travel with the team to races and tests.
  • Professionally represent the team and its sponsors on and off-track premises.
  • Provide assistance to other team members on other duties as appropriate.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be eligible to work in the US.
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Knowledge of mechanical components, electronics and structural framework of race cars.
  • Reading, writing and basic arithmetic skills required.
  • Must be able to concentrate on detailed work for long periods and be able to stand, bend, stoop and work in awkward positions. Moderate to heavy lifting is an essential component of this position.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Technical/High Performance College Degree
  • 3+ years’ (preferred) experience as a mechanic on Indycar, IMSA or other open wheel series travel crew.
  • Must meet professional level performance criteria to be a member of the pit crew.
  • Demonstrate a complete understanding of set-up specifications for race cars and the appropriate safety mechanisms for each component.
  • Knowledge of mechanical components, electronics and structural framework of race cars.
  • Experience using one or more of the following: lathe, mill, drill press, band saw.
  • Must be proficient in using precision measuring devices.
  • Magnaflux & Zyglo non-destructive inspection certification preferred.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of emergency safety procedures and an ability to use safety equipment correctly.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills required. Must have excellent communications skills.
