Manufacturing Engineer

The Role

Tesla is currently seeking motivated and accomplished Manufacturing Engineers for the solar roof line here in Buffalo, NY at Gigafactory II. He/she will be a part of the Solar Module Manufacturing Engineering Team, and will aid with the installation, ramp-up, and operation of our manufacturing lines.  He/she will assist with startup and technical transfer of the line to Operations, qualifying equipment for use with the highest standards of safety, quality, and output.  The Manufacturing Engineers will engage with Tesla’s internal Reliability, Facilities, Process, and Quality teams.

Responsibilities

  • Display a positive attitude and practice strong work ethics that reflects the mission, philosophy and goals of Tesla.
  • Aid with ramp-up and continuous operation of all module manufacturing equipment, including but not limited to the following: Machine troubleshooting, reviewing designs for solar module manufacturing equipment, generating and maintaining documentation, overseeing technician/operator training of the equipment, maintaining a BOM and ensuring proper spare and consumable parts availability.
  • Day to day coverage of production line equipment: respond to alarms, breakdowns, and Production requests quickly and efficiently to minimize downtime.
  • Collaborate with cross-function technical teams to meet company milestones and objectives.
  • Technical support, problem solving and resolution execution for yield and throughput improvement of Module Operations.
  • Become Expert Level Trainer on all machines in assigned area and be responsible for the level of knowledge of Shift maintenance technicians.
  • Work independently and with vendors to understand root cause of failures, propose design or component changes, and implement/validate equipment modifications.
  • Develop and maintain operating procedures and maintenance schedule/instructions, within company guidelines; train operators and maintenance technicians on proper execution and verify compliance.
  • Participate in spare part analysis and inventory development, cost reduction and improvement working with Spares Coordinator and Maintenance Engineering to RMA faulty components and communicate needs to the vendor.
  • Drive other projects as needed by management or as business needs change.

Requirements

  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields and/or equivalent industry experience.
  • Evidence of exceptional ability.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience building and troubleshooting electromechanical systems.
  • Hands-on experience with some or all of the following: robots, adhesive dispense systems, solar laminators, converting equipment, solar module test equipment.
  • Strong written & verbal communication skills, read/interpret documents for equipment operation.
  • Able to maintain organization and focus in a highly dynamic environment.
  • Able to perform occasional shift work (nights), overtime as needed and able to travel 10% of the time, both domestically and internationally.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment criminal background screen.  Additional pre-employment driving and drug screens may be required based on job responsibilities.
