The Role  

Job Summary & Responsibilities: 

The Managing Editor for MotorTrend Group’s Digital properties will sit at the intersection of editorial, product, and business operations, overseeing the homepage coverage and programming of stories across all of our digital properties and apps including iconic brands like MotorTrend.com, HotRod.com, AutomobileMag.com, and over a dozen other automotive properties. We are looking for a strategic, creative, digital business-minded leader to oversee our daily and long-term editorial operations. This person will partner with and support editorial leadership, day-to-day, and work cross-functionally to make our editorial team thrive. He or she will lead our efforts to identify-and launch new editorial / signature opportunities 

The Managing Editor’s team is responsible for growing traffic, uniques, visits, and engagement across all of MotorTrend Group websites, apps, and digital platforms – including homepage editorial programming, headline optimization, and editorial enterprise features,. The ME will manage the editorial calendar, budget, and workflow; coach and mentor writers and editors; partner with audience development & SEO teams to ensure best practices are being followed; and help drive strategic brand initiatives (e.g. video concepts, podcasts, events, and ambitious multi-platform content packages. 

The Managing Editor will co-lead editorial meetings, determine daily/weekly priorities, allocate resources, track performance vs. plan in terms of metrics and support the Editor in Chief in overseeing the editorial process from ideation to publication. The ME will also work closely with the art and video teams to develop rich, multimedia storytelling. The Managing Editor will be expected to oversee the MotorTrend homepage, including story selection, packaging, presentation and overall design. The Managing Editor will work closely with MotorTrend's Analytics and Strategy experts to increase audience numbers and maximize engagement. 

Responsibilities 

  • Set daily and weekly story budget and priorities for assignment editors and features writers. 
  • Manage, educate and motivate the editorial team to create high-quality content under tight deadlines. 
  • Maintain editorial calendar and create content plans around tent pole events, premieres, etc 
  • Collaborate with sales, social and video teams to align on strategy, ideate, and produce content. 
  • Drive key product features and launches, and track impact to traffic and engagement.
  • Use data and analytics to maximize the strategic value of all articles. Work with the Analytics team on measurement framework to accurately define and track a healthy and engaged community, converging what’s happening on scaled communications with business metrics. Identify trends within our content, and how to capitalize on them for our audience. 
  • Streamlining many of our editorial processes. 
  • Expanding MT’s content offerings to a younger and more diverse audience. 
  • Packaging MT’s content with a unique story for our sales team to create meaningful sponsorship opportunities. 
  • Support Editor in Chief on day-to-day basis as needed, and on big-picture strategic initiatives 
  • Work closely with the Editor in Chief on our platform-based editorial publications strategy 
  • Use metrics to identify untapped opportunities in MT's editorial offerings and strategically lead effort to fill that space 
  • Project-manage new article launches, working cross-functionally with editorial, product, marketing and BI 
  • Collaborate with product team as needed to improve efficiency of our platform-based publications 
  • Monitor and manage publication metrics and performance over time 
  • Drive the editorial calendar and content roadmap 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: 

  • 5+ years’ experience running editorial teams, community management, social media or content marketing in innovative, digital enterprises as well as operating within and leading cross-functional teams.  
  • Journalism and digital newsroom experience 
  • Genuine love for internet culture and entertainment news 
  • Experience analyzing, interpreting, and leveraging data to make business decisions. Experience with SEO and analytics 
  • Strong editorial judgment and quick decision-making skills 
  • Collaborative, upbeat, and solutions-oriented 
  • Proven record of solving hard problems in creative and strategic ways 
  • Comfortable making data- as well as instinct-based decisions 
  • Business-minded editorial lead with experience building and managing teams, crunching data, goal setting, and achievement 
  • Experience analyzing what’s working and what’s not and iterating constantly 
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with the ability to set goals and prioritize initiatives with minimal guidance. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • The ability to sit for prolonged period of time and view computer screen.

  • Work is performed in an office environment that is well lit and ventilated.
