Lead Powertrain Design Engineer

We have a new opportunity in our Powertrain team as Lead Powertrain Design Engineer. This position will be within our Engineering Office based in Enstone covering a diverse range of components and systems, resulting in a direct and significant contribution to our car performance.

 

Lead Powertrain Design Engineer – The Role

Reporting to the Head of Powertrain Design, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading the Transmission Team to create innovative transmission solutions that maximise performance and reliability on the track. You will be responsible for all stages of the design process and the technical aspects of project leadership, from initial concept development to detailed design, analysis, and testing.

The Lead Powertrain Design Engineer will utilise advanced engineering software and tools to model and simulate various transmission configurations, ensuring optimal gear ratios, torque distribution, and overall performance. You will also collaborate with other departments such as aerodynamics, the performance systems group, chassis engineering, and the rest of the Powertrain Team to ensure seamless integration of the transmission system with other components of the car. Additionally, this role requires staying up to date with the latest technological advancements in transmission systems and applying them to enhance the team's competitive edge.

The Transmission Group is also responsible for Gearbox Dyno Testing Programmes, including the installations and design of specific test assemblies for race car prove-out, so some travel to our Power Unit factory in Viry-Châtillon may be required.

 

Lead Powertrain Design Engineer – The Person

We are looking for an individual who has extensive experience of working in an engineering leadership role within motorsport, preferably in an F1 team. Excellent communication skills and a keen eye for detail are a must, alongside the ability to work under pressure. You must also possess the following:

  • A Mechanical Engineering Masters Degree or comparable qualification
  • Experience of CAD (such as Catia V5/3DX)
  • Experience of delivering complex engineering projects
  • The ability to approach design tasks by application of engineering first principles
  • An understanding of the implications on car performance when considering design criteria
  • High attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and collaborative skills across all levels

Candidates must be self-motivated, capable of leading a team of engineers and delivering high quality designs to crucial deadlines.
