Lead Controls Engineer

The Technology Group (JTG) provides design and build services for government and commercial clients worldwide. The market areas served are most notably test facilities and scientific facilities. JTG is looking for a Controls Engineer to support projects ranging from small studies to multi-million dollar turn-key supply. The successful candidate must be team-oriented, organized, able to communicate to all levels of the organization, and able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Duties will include:

  • Lead controls discipline work on multi-discipline projects with teams of 1 to 5 engineers, designer, and engineering associates.
  • Develop plans and budgets for project work from early in the marketing phase through to installation and commissioning.
  • Develop hardware assembly and wiring diagrams for control and data acquisition systems.
  • Develop control system software designs
  • Develop control system software in PLC ladder logic, function block, HMI programming, etc.
  • Develop interfaces to test facility equipment using hardwired interfaces and industrial networks
  • Apply closed loop controls methods to control continuously variable systems using PID algorithms
  • Support hardware assembly and fabrication.
  • Perform facility startup, checkout and commissioning, domestically and abroad.
  • Communicate with clients and management regarding status.
  • Coordinate with other engineering discipline and departments to ensure success.
  • Experience with Siemens TIA Portal Step 7, Rockwell Studio 5000, or GE Proficy ME a plus

This position will require control system design and implementation that will include temperature, pressure, model positioning, system and human safety, and other advanced systems to meet the needs of today’s growing technology industry.

Applicant must have Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with 5+ years direct experience in control system design. The candidate must be experienced in PLC and HMI programming software skills. Proficiency in all Microsoft Office programs is required. Good communications and interpersonal relations skills are needed.

Successful candidates will have an industrial applications background in facility control systems, motor control, drive systems, and design for electrical safety. This position requires total project cycle experience including: project leadership, budgeting and planning, design analysis, developing drawings with designers, preparing specifications, construction support, post design engineering services, start-up and commissioning of facility control systems. Construction estimating and proposal development may also be required.

Essential Functions:

  • Must maneuver in and around facility equipment while obtaining field measurements and performing equipment troubleshooting. 15%
  • May bring candidate in proximity of extreme temperature variations, rotating equipment, and high noise levels. 5%
  • Will likely be in proximity of electrical and other hazards. Appropriate PPE must be worn and may include eye protection, hearing protection, and arc flash protection. 5%
  • Work will mainly be performed inside an office, lab environment, or indoors on a construction site. 95%
  • Field work may include outside work. 5%
  • Travel will be required to attend customer meetings and perform field work. 30%
  • Work with general office equipment (computers, fax, telephones, copiers, etc. ) 80%
  • Control Devices such as PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, motor controls, industrial instrumentation, data acquisition measurement systems, etc. 50%
  • Handheld equipment such as digital multimeters and oscilloscopes. 10%
  • Occasional overtime required to meet demanding schedules. 15%
  • During field assignments, 2nd or 3rd shift may be necessary. 10%
  • Regular attendance is mandatory to meet schedules.
  • Must take and pass a background screen and drug test.
