Junior Aerodynamicist (London, United Kingdom)

The FIA Aerodynamics Department has an exciting opportunity for a Junior Aerodynamicist to join our UK-based team. This role supports the development of future Formula 1 Technical Regulations while contributing to similar activities for feeder categories, including F2, F3, F4, and Formula Regional (FR). 

As a key member of the team, you will play an integral part in shaping the future of motorsport through innovative aerodynamic research and regulation development. 

 

MISSIONS AND RESPONSABILITIES:

As a Junior Aerodynamicist you will:  

  • Contribute to the FIA aerodynamic research group by developing methodologies to define the fundamental architecture of future Formula One and other single-seater racing cars
  • Utilize innovative Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques to develop a detailed understanding of whole-car and multi-car aerodynamic influences
  • Define representative aerodynamic development conditions, calculation methodologies, and physics models to achieve robust and reliable aerodynamic solutions
  • Use CAD tools and collaborate with Surface Designers to generate geometries that meet agreed-upon performance objectives
  • Analyse aerodynamic results, prepare detailed reports, and present findings for both internal and external stakeholders
  • Liaise with aerodynamic research consultants and contractors to ensure alignment with project objectives
  • Contribute to the formulation of Technical Regulations that define the aerodynamic standards for future Formula One and single-seater racing categories
  • Review and provide feedback on F1 team legality interpretations, and participate in CAD-based legality checks for current F1 cars in accordance with the published Technical Regulations
  • Foster and maintain positive relationships with Formula One Management (FOM) and all Formula One teams
  • Adhere to FIA health and safety requirements, ensuring safe practices at all times

PROFILE:

  • University degree in Aeronautical Engineering or equivalent
  • Up to 3 years of experience in a similar role, ideally in an F1 aerodynamic development environment  
  • Native or fluent English proficiency (both written and spoken)
  • Proficiency in CAD software, specifically Siemens NX or Dassault CATIA 
  • Software development skills, particularly in Python or related programming languages is an asset 
  • Good understanding of CFD methodologies, including their capabilities and limitations  
  • Ability to combine creativity and innovation with a meticulous attention to detail
  • Skilled in balancing conceptual design with practical implementation 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage priorities effectively to meet departmental deadlines
