IMS Sign Shop Foreman

POSITION SUMMARY:

The iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway seeks a team-oriented Sign Shop Foreman with Sign Industry experience. The ideal candidate will love managing projects and supervising others while working at a historic motorsports facility. This position is responsible for a wide range of duties related to the production, installation and post-production of facility signage.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Coordinates project management software to track progress of jobs, timing, material used and status of open jobs.
  • Advises on cost effective and feasible project execution.
  • Operates within a defined annual budget.
  • Work with the Creative Department to ensure brand standards are maintained on all signage.
  • With the Supervisor, provides support for Facilities Department.
  • Uses computer programs to generate or recreate logos, text, and other graphic designs.
  • Designs, cuts, and applies signage of various types.
  • Reads work order or receives instruction from supervisor regarding specific tasks assigned.
  • Creates and/or designs specific detailed drawings or logos for reproduction on specialized equipment.
  • Measures specific dimensions for sign placement and/or design size - either during creation of designs or on site of where installation will occur.
  • Cuts material for installation of design (plastic, wood, metal or other) using handsaws, table saws and/or other equipment.
  • Scans drawings and/or designs into several computer applications for reproduction of some or all original drawing or design.
  • Cuts material either by hand or plotting devices to create vinyl and other materials in certain shapes or patterns to be incorporated for specific signage or design application.
  • Prints logos or designs on vinyl material by use of specialized sign equipment and proprietary computer programs.
  • Cleans and or prepares surfaces of objects or materials that will receive such signage and or designs, using cleaning chemicals and other methods.
  • Uses ladders, and/or lifts to apply signage in some situations.
  • Removes old or outdated signage from existing structures and/or objects.
  • Advises, maintains and repairs equipment and software used in creation of signage and/or designs (computers, plotters, printers, general equipment).
  • Works with outside vendors and/or technicians responsible for providing equipment and/or supplies for all areas of related work.
  • Files and/or maintains filing of work orders, design printouts, and all other information pertaining to work orders and/or work requests of this department.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies and/or materials for production of signage.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor. The Facilities Department is responsible for the entirety of the grounds and buildings at IMS. Due to the sometimes-unpredictable nature of being a multi-event facility, all members of the Facilities team may be required to occasionally help with responsibilities outside their normal job description.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervisor of one to two full-time staff plus one or more part-time staff.

Education

  • Two-year relevant technical training or Associates degree from an accredited college/university preferred

Skills/Experience

  • Minimum five years’ practical experience required
  • Minimum three years’ supervisory experience. Must have strong leadership skills
  • Computer experience, knowledge of sign industry and/or design background. Must have knowledge of the following or similar software: Omega graphics software, Efficient in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Flexi Print Production Manager, Word and Excel
  • General mathematic skills such as reading of measuring devices, decimal conversion of inches, cost figuring, figuring square feet or area at a high school graduate level
  • Must have good customer service skills with a pleasant demeanor, be a go-getter and team player

Travel/Work Hours

  • No travel required. Must be able to work overtime and weekends as needed.
  • Required ability to work long hours, evenings, weekends & holidays during entire event season.

  • The ability to lift up to 50lbs
  • Constant standing, walking, stooping, kneeling and repeated bending
  • Constant reaching high/low/level and repetitive twisting or pressure involving wrists or hands
  • Frequent use of ladders/scaffold/lifts
  • Specific vision abilities include distinguishing basic shades and colors
