Equipment Engineer

The Role

The Equipment Engineer is an integral part of the operations team and will be responsible for applying automation experience to assist in production line start up and long-term continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Own all aspects of equipment for the Powertrain manufacturing lines from equipment improvement to new equipment startup.
  • Work collaboratively with design, product excellence, production operations, Manufacturing Engineering, Process Engineering, Maintenance and other cross-functional teams as the automation expert to ensure production lines run in a safe, efficient manner producing high quality parts.
  • Lead mechanical design of equipment upgrades using Solidworks with a focus on serviceability and reliability.
  • Coordinate with vendors and internal teams to manufacture and install machinery and machine components.
  • Become owner / subject matter expert on various systems and technologies to drive equipment-related process improvement including detailed troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
  • Build training material, maintenance routines, service bulletins, and related documentation related to cradle to grave equipment life cycle management.
  • Lead safety and ergonomic improvements to production equipment, which meets or exceeds regulations or best practices.
  • Develop and improve equipment validation procedures including calibration and qualification.
  • Identify equipment critical spare parts and ensure sufficient coverage to prevent extended downtime situations.
  • Develop and manage FMEA risk assessments to prioritize equipment improvement projects and ensure sufficient repair strategies.
  • Provide hands-on support to maintenance team to troubleshoot and resolve extended downtime situations.

Qualifications/Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
  • Prefer 5+ years of experience in industrial automation design, repair and ownership.
  • Proficiency with Solidworks required; Familiarity with CATIA and AutoCAD desired.
  • Familiarity with PLC Controls (Allen Bradley), Fanuc robots and electrical troubleshooting desired.
  • Experience with HMIs (FactoryTalk and Ignition) desired.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic/hydraulic systems.
  • Experience creating/updating electrical and fluid schematics.
  • Working knowledge of common materials, coatings and machining processes.
  • Familiarity with mechanical engineering concepts for high speed, high precision automation equipment, design and development process. (Kinematics, GD&T, Gage R&R).
  • Experience with autom ation, material handling, assembly, machining, or process controls.
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude required, including familiarity with common tools and mechanical inspection processes.
  • Ability to manage vendors, contractors, and internal resources in a complex environment.
  • Detail oriented with strong record-keeping and organizational skills.
