Engineering Technician, Chassis Controls

The Role The chassis controls team is seeking a technician to own the maintenance and organization of its development vehicles. The incumbent will work with the entire Tesla engineering organization to track the evolution of powertrain and suspension hardware so that the development fleet is in optimum shape for its mission. This is a broad role that will require both organizational and hands-on mechanical skills. The incumbent will have deep knowledge of vehicle systems and be able to judge the effect of subtle HW changes on dynamic vehicle performance. 

Responsibilities

  • Maintain vehicle fleet to ensure correct function and representative performance (alignment, etc.)
  • Coordinate vehicle HW and SW updates and re-work to keep fleet current with evolving hardware specification
  • Coordinate vehicle shipment to support testing activities; travel to remote locations to repair and update vehicles as necessary
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot vehicle HW and SW issues
  • Install and maintain test instrumentation
  • Execute testing in support of overall development effort as required

Desired skills and knowledge

  • Extensive experience with automotive systems, particularly chassis components and high voltage systems
  • Experience with vehicle CAN networks and the physical, message and signal level
  • Proven ability to debug failures to component level
  • Experience with instrumentation, data acquisition and analysis
  • Performance driver training or racing experience
  • Experience executing test plans an managing test programs a plus

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record with at least 2 years of driving experience and insurable
  • Associate’s Degree in Automotive Technology, Automobile Mechanic national certificate or Bachelor’s degree with extensive practical experience as a automotive technician
  • Factory Trained Master Status / OEM Training & hybrid experience preferred
  • Methodical and diligent, performs work with a strong sense of quality and craft
  • Is self-directing and able to work across the entire organization to collect parts and information to execute job responsibilities
  • Desire and ability to travel for long periods on short notice
