Engineering Maintenance Team Leader

Based in Gravesend, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an Engineering Maintenance Team Leader for a progressive manufacturer and supplier of lubricants and chemical for the automotive industry.

With a bright future ahead of the organisation, a Engineering Maintenance Team Leader is required to lead and manage delivery of strategic capital investment projects (CAPEX) and specific operational process improvements. 

This position will report to the Engineering Manager and be part of the Engineering function.

Main responsibilities include

  • Safety – to have and maintain the safety of yourself, colleagues and any visitors as the primary concern at all times.

  • Legal Obligations – be familiar and ensure the relevant legal obligations from an operational perspective are satisfied.

    • (e.g. HASWA, PUWER, COSHH, LOLER, Workplace Regs, Boiler Plant Regs, COMAH Regs etc)

  • Site Documentation - As the site custodian of all operational plant, the appropriate documentation, registers, drawings, schedules and inspection check lists shall be prepared, periodically reviewed and maintained in linen with changes.

    • (e.g. site plan, flow diagrams, P&IDs, electrical distribution network drawings, critical devices etc.)

  • Production Support – As the priority activity, the Engineering Maintenance team shall provide appropriate and adequate support to the production operation in order that product changeovers and breakdowns are carried out with minimal delays in response and completion times.

  • Planned Maintenance – Device, implement and maintain a planned maintenance strategy, agreed with all key stakeholders, employing specialist contractors as appropriate.

    • Such a system is expected to be developed to consider relative operational risk, priorities, available resources and PM system technologies.

    • Planned, preventative and predictive maintenance philosophies will be considered as appropriate.

  • Equipment Part Schedules & Spares – The planned maintenance strategy is expected to develop clear equipment schedules & spares lists.

    • These will be maintained, reviewed as changes occur and all spares, ancillaries & consumables which are deemed necessary to be held on site, will be controlled using an engineering stores system in order that actual inventory levels closely match those required.

  • Contractor Management – site management of contractors will be carried out in line with site procedures and policies, ensuring site inductions and permit to work systems are employed as appropriate.

  • Process Improvement – improvement opportunities will be identified using kaizen tools & techniques with investments supported by clear business justifications.

    • In this position, improvement projects are expected to be driven as the owner of Maintenance Engineering, as well as supporting other project teams as a key stakeholder.

  • Maintenance Engineers - To support, promote and motivate the Maintenance Engineers in relation to best practice and performing all duties to the highest achievable standard in a planned, controlled and safe manner.

  • Training – ensure a skills matrix is reviewed and the appropriate training, support, coaching & mentoring is identified and planned in line with business needs.

  • CAPEX & Asset Management – Managing the equipment and plant is effectively managing many of the business assets, and therefore participation of regular asset register reviews will be required.

    • The introduction/replacement of new/existing equipment will be managed using the CAPEX process.

  • OPEX – As a significant spend category within the overall Engineering budget, a firm understanding, control and accountability of spend within Engineering Maintenance is required to be demonstrated.

  • Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) – The above will be carried out, measured and target improvements identified using agreed Engineering KPIs.

    • Regular ‘dashboard’ reporting of Engineering Maintenance status, progress & KPI driven initiatives will be provided.

  • SIGO SSHE System - Participate and take ownership were required in the areas of SIGO (SSHE management system), LPS (Loss Prevention System), Quality and Controls.

  • General

  • To provide support to other members of the Engineering team or wider organisation, which may benefit from your skills, knowledge or experience.

  • To observe the company policies and guidelines, also encouraging other to as required.

In order to carry out this role, the following qualifications, skills, knowledge & experience are required…

Required

  • Technical Degree (Mechanical / Electrical / Process / Chemical / Manufacturing Engineering)

  • Strong Health, Safety and Environmental awareness

  • Minimum of 5 years in a manufacturing process environment

  • Project management skills, ideally using a Stage-Gate type risk approach

  • Ability to prepare and manage project specifications

  • Applied commercial skills, particularly in relation to specifying equipment and service offer purchase order requirements

  • Good awareness of CAPEX (capital) and OPEX (revenue) budgets

  • Excellent written, aural and presentation communication skills

  • Ability to listen, consider and persuade in a positive manner

  • Tenatious nature with ability to positively focus on final objective

  • Well organised and methodical approach

  • Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines

  • Excellent time keeping

Desirable

  • PRINCE 2 or other project management courses/qualification

  • Lean Manufacturing

  • 6 SIGMA

  • Team leadership potential would be beneficial
