Electrical Engineer

Description

Description: Tesla is looking for an amazing electrical engineer to lead the design, deployment, and support of automated and semi-automated manufacturing test equipment. You will create outstanding product solutions that inter-operate with a variety of manufacturing, electronics, and firmware subsystems. The position is based at Tesla’s game-changing Gigafactory1 outside of Reno, Nevada.

Responsibilities

  • Design manufacturing test machines for products ranging from battery through high powered electronics assemblies.
  • Drive ultra-reliable, cost effective designs that beat schedules.
  • Ensure test machines provide effective testing coverage, meet up time needs, and reduce cycle time requirements for high volume manufacturing.
  • Drive continuously increasing test automation, including robotics and actuator based test systems.
  • Design test systems that are resilient from device under test issues, and challenging power conditions present in high volume factories worldwide.
  • Design power electronics measurement and analysis systems to ensure top quality delivery to every customer.
  • Develop tester safety systems using interlocks and other safety design techniques as appropriate.
  • Create outstanding documentation packages, train others in the maintenance and long term usage of the test systems.
  • Drive external partners including tester assembly houses and contract manufacturers worldwide.
  • Qualify testers for deployment to a long life of high quality results

Requirements

  • BS in Electrical Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in designing test machines for high volume manufacturing
  • Significant experience with NI LabVIEW and digital / analog interfaces for test systems.
  • Expertise in power electronics
  • Ability to lead projects and architect the overall system design (including inputs to mechanical and software design)
  • Participate in initial equipment conceptual development and carefully balance product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead-time limits.
  • Able to define most efficient plan for testing, focusing on test time reduction and low complexity to promptly release testers.
  • Establish clear, concise test plans, and control test plan execution
  • Designing hardware, sourcing components, developing schematics, managing layout, and testing prototypes to validate hardware.
  • Proficiency with design process integration and electromechanical / mechatronic systems
  • Well versed in electrical codes (NEC,NFPA, IEC), standards (UL) and design practices for panel design and layout
  • Good knowledge and background in various electrical CAD design software
  • Deep understanding of electrical theory
  • Experience in deploying test machines in a large scale manufacturing environment and ability to come up with rapid methods for scaling and duplication of test equipment.
  • Experience with power semiconductors – IGBTs, Mosfets, gate drive and protection circuitry
  • Expert knowledge of CAN
