Controls Engineer

Applications are invited for the post of Control Engineer within Prototype and Test, the in-house research and development test facility for Williams Group companies. This part of the department provides all forms of factory-based component and vehicle testing support for both our racing activities and external projects for Williams Advanced Engineering.

Main accountabilities

Reporting to the Test Cell Manager, you will primarily be responsible for all rig control software within the research & development and Hydraulics test areas. This will include the care of our battery simulators, Dynos and assisting with electronic specifications of new test rigs. You will work closely with the Electronics engineer to provide all round electronics support for existing and future projects.
You may also be called upon to support testing activities in the test lab area of the department and at external test facilities collaborating with other Williams control engineers.

Person specification

You will be proactive and able to work unsupervised using your own initiative to meet project deadlines and bring improvements to the test facility. You will also be willing to learn new skills to cover the complete range of tasks that the role will entail. The ideal candidates will be educated to HNC/HND or Degree level and have experience in following areas:

• Building and programming all aspects of National Instruments/Labview
• Building and programming dSpace and SpeedGoat control systems
• Matlab/Simulink installations and Atlas data acquisitions
• Designing and building bespoke electronics equipment
• Designing and coding bespoke monitoring software and tools
• Working with high voltage ERS components (batteries, motor-generators, inverters)
• System troubleshooting (looms, electronics, rig failures, control software)
• Specifying and working with electric motors/dyno absorbers (asynchronous, PMMs etc)
• Test rig CAN, Ethernet communications and familiarity with the TAG F1 ECU

Experience in a Formula 1 or vehicle test environment is desirable but not essential.
