Your Impact:

Jacobs is hiring an Aerospace / Mechanical Engineer for the Bingham Farms, MI or Tullahoma Tennessee office full-time position. This work assignment will team the candidate with an experienced engineer to perform Real-world CFD applications. The candidate will learn how realistic, complex flow simulation is done in the industry, and will get exposure to applications in multiple industries.

This position requires a motivated candidate who is team-oriented, organized, and able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. The engineer will work in multiple project teams and the workload is very diverse and challenging.

  • The candidate will support ‘specialty engineering’ consulting projects for clients around the world who need CFD engineering services to solve problems in multiple industries (automotive, aerospace, petrochemical, energy, etc). Responsibilities of this role include understanding client needs and performing CFD analyses, and developing technical reports.
  • The candidate will work with colleagues on the engineering design for test facility design (wind tunnels, rocket test stands, jet engine test facilities, etc), modernization, and optimization projects for the aerospace and automotive industries.

3) The candidate is expected to have the capability to organize, write, and prepare technical presentations, and reports.

Your Impact:

Computational Fluid Dynamics Engineer

Join a team turning abstract ideas into realities. Collaborate with industry experts to develop solutions to mission-critical challenges, such as NASA’s return to the moon, the DoD’s national security initiatives, international automotive manufacturers’ development of fuel-efficient and electric vehicles, and the DoE’s energy research. At Jacobs, we tackle challenges in emerging technologies, cyber, intelligence, space exploration, energy transformation, and resiliency to ensure national security. As the world’s thinkers, visionaries, and doers, we disrupt the status quo and affect real, meaningful change in how we provide solutions to our customers, operate our business, and support communities.

Our Group specializes in the design, construction, and operation of unique and complex research and development facilities, including, for example, wind tunnels (aerospace, automotive, and motorsports), rocket engine test stands, climatic chambers, jet engine test cells, acoustic chambers, altitude test facilities, captive trajectory systems, and nuclear processing facilities. Our projects span the automotive, motorsports, defense, nuclear, and aerospace markets. Recent clients include Audi, Boeing, BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, Honda, General Motors, NASA, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Department of Energy, Volkswagen, confidential F1 motorsports clients, and many others in North America, Europe, and Asia.

The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) engineer is a member of the Fluid Dynamics Acoustics and Propulsion section that supports Jacobs Technology’s industrial projects as well as the section’s specialty engineering services. The specialty engineering services projects include a wide range of NASA projects, water resources, combustion, heat transfer, datacenter projects, etc.

The Fluid Dynamics Acoustics and Propulsion section currently includes approximately 14 talented professionals working on many unique and challenging projects including quick turn-around projects ranging from a few hours to large multi-year projects with over 10,000 labor hours. The Fluid Dynamics Acoustics and Propulsion section possess state-of-the-art 1200 core HPCs with full-time IT support, and commercial CFD licenses available for each employee.

As a CFD engineer, you will be responsible for performing analytical engineering with a focus on computational fluid dynamics. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with significant experience or academic background in CFD and 3D modeling software.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

The successful candidate will have:

1) An M.S. degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering. Only candidates with (0-5) years of work experience will be considered.

2) Coursework in fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, compressible flows, heat transfer, combustion, turbomachinery, and numerical methods. Any specific coursework or experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics, Acoustics, and Turbulence is desired.

3) (Primary work focus) A strong understanding of fluid mechanics, with specific skills in numerical analysis. CFD fundamentals are required, including meshing, turbulence modeling, and post-processing.

a) Required: Experience using a commercial 3D CAD program (Inventor Preferred)

b) Required: Experience using a CFD tool from CAD to Post Processing for multiple industrial applications.

c) Highly desirable: Experience with STAR-CCM+, and Linux/Unix

d) Desirable: Ability to perform occasional coding with either C/C++ or JAVA (or similar).

4) Excellent analytical and technical skills.

5) Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills.

6) The ability to work seamlessly in a team and independently.

7) The ability to perform work thoroughly with great attention to accuracy and details.

8) An ‘engineering curiosity’ towards understanding how and why systems work.

9) Due to the nature of our projects, U.S. citizenship is required.
