Composite Design Engineer

For many fans of Formula One, the sport exists between lights and chequered flag on a Sunday afternoon. It begins and ends with the exploits of the drivers on the track. But this is merely the tip of the spear. The reality of modern F1 is that of a complex and intertwined operation, every part of which needs to perform near its limit if success is to be achieved. From the pit crew searching for the ultimate repeatable pit stop, to the inspiration of the designers, the application of engineers and the herculean efforts of an army of fabricators and machinists. Much of our success is thanks to the diversity of thought and spectrum of skill sets held within the team, our ability to recognise unique contributions from individual team members is just a part of why we love what we do.

Job Description

Red Bull Powertrains have an exciting opportunity to be a part of our expanding Power Unit engineering team. Our open, dynamic environment ensures that everyone can make a valuable contribution and we are looking for a Composites Design Engineer for the Power Unit Concept and Hybrid Mechanical Department to deliver World Championship winning cars year on year.

Working from our Milton Keynes factory you will work within the Concept and Hybrid Mechanics Department of Red Bull Powertrains. You will be responsible for the composites design and development of both the ESS enclosure and PU intake system of our F1 PU to deliver the maximum performance potential to the podium. From initial design studies through to the detailed design, release of tooling, inserts and ply book you will be responsible for all aspects of the composite parts design and manufacturing.  Packaging, structural and thermal implications must be considered in order to deliver the world class composite solutions for the PU.

Key requirements

  • A Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent qualification.

  • Extensive experience in F1 hybrid power unit design is advantageous but high-performance racing experience is a pre-requisite.

  • A high level of Mechanical Engineering competence in both technical and practical applications.

  • Experience of clean sheet design from concept to track and a passion for innovation.

  • A thorough understanding of hybrid engine design and its contribution to on track performance.

  • Proven history of successful fault investigation, containment and rectification.

Expected

  • In-depth knowledge of composite part design and manufacture.

  • Ability to take concepts and turn them into fully detailed parts including releasing all mould tools, inserts, cores and ply books.

  • An understanding of structural composites design to create efficient, lightweight structures that pass all mechanical testing required (UN travel certification and high G crash cases)

  • An appreciation of high voltage electrical design and thermal analysis.

  • Practical test and data analysis experience, to define validation and confirmation test requirements.

  • Proven track record of design for manufacture and design for assembly.
