CFD Thermodynamicist

We have an exciting and challenging opportunity for a CFD Thermodynamicist within the Aerodynamics Department, developing effective thermal management solutions for the racecar brake systems and other components around the wheels.

Key responsibilities:

• The candidate will be responsible for driving designs from the concept stage and following the design process through to their implementation on the racecar.
• Using an innovative approach, you will work alongside multiple engineering disciplines to develop efficient solutions for the racecar.
• Support the race team by providing appropriate cooling specifications and reacting to the ever-evolving requirements from track and delivering solutions in a timely manner.
• Monitoring the cooling performance at track and identifying new opportunities for improvement.
• The role is primarily using CFD software on complex geometries to develop new and novel designs, striving to improve all aspects of what we do with the sole aim of optimising the performance taken to the racecar.
• Initiate appropriate tests for brake dyno and track testing, compiling a test specification, arranging the required instrumentation and analysing the data gathered; an active role during brake dyno testing is essential.
• Continuous improvement of the tools we use and the correlation between CFD, brake dyno and track testing, to maximise the efficiency of the designs for the racecar.

Candidate Profile

• A strong Mechanical or Aeronautical degree is essential.
• Self-motivated, excellent communication, problem solving and time management skills.
• Able to work under minimal supervision to strict deadlines and in a professional manner is essential.
• Resilient and comfortable working under pressure, often to tight timescales.
• Excellent analytical and dynamic problem-solving skills along with sound attention to detail.
• High level of self-motivation and flexibility.
• A comprehensive understanding of CFD, heat transfer and aerodynamics.
• A proven track record with commercial CFD codes.
• The ability to work with complex geometries and build appropriate CFD models.

Flexibility in hours and approach is required, along with a ‘can do’, ‘team playing’ attitude. Good verbal and written communication skills are very important.
