CFD R&D Engineer

Purpose of the Role:   

This role is focused on the development and improvement of the CFD tools and capabilities for the Aerodynamic department. The role will also include support of and collaboration with the Aerodynamic correlation team in order to provide CFD expertise in solving correlation challenges between our experimental environments. 

Role Dimensions:  

  • Part of the CFD Methodology team, reporting to the CFD Methodology Team Leader
  • This role is predominantly carried out within core hours, though some flexibility in working hours may be needed
  • This role is predominantly factory based

Key Relationships: 

  • CFD Methodology Team Leader and other members of the CFD Methodology team
  • Aerodynamicists from the development and correlation groups

Principal Accountabilities: 

  • Perform CFD R&D activities. These will encompass the exploration of new CFD simulation methodologies and numerical methods, benchmark of new software, and collaboration with Universities and external partners in order to exploit the latest advancements in CFD technology
  • Further develop and automate the CFD workflow: ranging from the definition of the CFD CAD requirements up to the CFD simulation methodology and post processing of the results
  • Keep a strong link with the aerodynamic development teams, understanding their needs and requirements
  • Keep a strong link with the correlation team: understanding the challenges of CFD correlation, providing CFD expertise and support
  • Provide support to the aerodynamicists on use of CFD in the design process, promoting wider awareness and understanding of the CFD capabilities

Knowledge, Skills and Experience: 

  • Degree in aeronautical engineering and preferably some post-graduate qualification/research using CFD techniques and numerical methods
  • Knowledge and experience of CFD software development using high level programming languages 
  • Comfortable with working in Linux environment, shell scripting, Java and Python programming and C++
  • Experience in OpenFoam code development would be an advantage
  • Experience of using industrial flow solvers (CCM+ / Fluent / OpenFoam) and CAD packages
  • Proven high standard of technical ability and fundamental understanding of fluid mechanics
  • Self-motivated and high levels of initiative
