Battery Systems Engineer

Honda Racing F1 are seeking an experienced Battery Systems Engineer to work within the Material Engineering Group of Energy Recovery System (ERS) Development working on the Honda Formula one project. The Battery Systems Engineer will be involved in supporting Energy Storage (ES) design, which involves from initial idea with chemical, electrical and mechanical through to the end of life of the battery in race and cooling system, including issues solving and failure analysis.

You will ensure that the conceptual cell specification from the chemical and electrical point of view are defined and developed accordingly and tested under specified test condition. The Battery Systems Engineer will be responsible for defining specific tests in order to approve their components / systems for use, to analysis performance relative to specification, maximizing the proven envelope and associated performance opportunities over the lifecycle of the battery. They will be responsible for ensuring that the ESS passes all essential standards and regulations.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

Creation of robust and versatile models to demonstrate concepts; both in solids and surfaces, with engineering drawings to complement design release
Characterise cell performance and battery life
Organise and oversee cell and battery testing
Technical development of ES components & systems
Driving development of cell and battery modelling including heat transport to inside / outside the battery
Problem solving & failure analysis
Liaising with other technical groups, including electronics and internal / external suppliers.
Reporting of results in a clear, concise and structured manner.
Keep up to date with the latest battery technology and future developments
Any other tasks as reasonably required by the Company

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Good knowledge of batteries and battery management systems.
Good knowledge of High Voltage AC & DC systems, including safety considerations for design & operation.
Knowledge of material properties and typical factors of safety to apply for various conditions.
Previous experience of working within motorsport (ideally Formula 1) or another cutting edge industry and knowledge of industry best practices.
Ability to engineer solutions considering material selection, manufacturability, other process requirements, geometrical tolerance and control over critical features, etc.
Ability to analyse data for optimum performance and reliability (preferably ATLAS)
Ability to use CAD software (Preferably Catia V5) to scheme and design cells to define their specification is beneficial.
Good knowledge of ESS parts and previous ESS experience beneficial.
