Apprentice Engineering Technician - Composites

Codem Composites, based in Orton Southgate, Peterborough is a specialist engineering and technology company focused on carbon fibre component manufacture, serving the motorsport and satellite communications industry as well as other commercial and bespoke applications.

Codem runs an active apprenticeship scheme with currently 9 apprentices in differing stages of development working towards their Level 3 Composites Technician BTEC Diploma and NVQ. These composites-tailored Engineering apprenticeships allow apprentices to learn more specialist skills in carbon fibre and other composite materials.

Key Duties include:

Carrying out all duties required in the manufacture of composite tools, parts and assemblies to a high specification using advanced composite materials. This includes:

  • interpretation of customer drawings
  • pattern sealing and preparation for moulding
  • mould tool manufacture and preparation for production
  • tool maintenance
  • manufacture of templates
  • kit cutting
  • cutting and tailoring of carbon and glass fibre cloths pre-impregnated with epoxy resin
  • working with honeycomb and foam cores
  • vacuum bagging techniques
  • curing techniques
  • pressing
  • close tolerance trimming
  • fitting
  • bonding
  • surface finishing

Due to the nature of work we do at Codem, with clients such as the F1 motorsports industry and military applications, we have seasonal busy periods (Dec – April) where shift work and additional overtime may be required, there is also a requirement to work on bank holidays (except Christmas). Therefore, we are looking for individuals who can work flexibly to ensure that we can hit our customers' deadlines.

Apprenticeship Training:

The role also includes weekly day release study at iMET, Alconbury Weald as part of the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship. You will be expected to pass all exams and complete all coursework within the allocated timescales.

  • You will gain a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Composites Engineering and a NVQ Level 3 in Composites Engineering (QCF)
  • On completion, you will be eligible to apply for Engineering Technician (EngTech) status with the Institute of Materials (IOM3) and/or the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)

Required Qualifications:

You will need a minimum of four GCSE's including English, Maths and Science with a minimum grade of C/5 in Maths
