Vehicle Performance and Simulation Engineer

For many fans of formula one, the sport exists between lights and chequered flag on a Sunday afternoon. It begins and ends with the exploits of the drivers on the track. But this is merely the tip of the spear. The reality of modern f1 is that of a complex and intertwined operation, every part of which needs to perform near its limit if success is to be achieved. From the pit crew searching for the ultimate repeatable pit stop, to the inspiration of the designers, the application of engineers and the herculean efforts of an army of fabricators and machinists, formula one is a team sport in a very literal sense – that's why we love what we do.

Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Vehicle Performance and Simulation Engineer to join our Vehicle Performance Group.

The Vehicle Performance Group’s function is to provide direction and solutions to continuously improve the performance of future car concepts, deliver in season development concepts and optimise the performance of the car during race events.

The primary purpose of this specific role is to provide a major contribution towards the vehicle performance development in the primary areas of tyre, suspension, power unit and aerodynamic performance utilisation.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have:

  • Develop advanced analysis techniques and methods to identify performance limitations of the car
  • Utilise offline vehicle dynamic tools and the driver in the loop simulator to define and develop future concepts to deliver performance improvements on track
  • Provide support to our Simulation Group to improve and refine our suite of Vehicle Simulation tools
  • Support the continuous improvement of simulation tools through validation and correlation of both vehicle and vehicle subsystem models
  • An excellent academic background with a degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering or Physics.
  • Experience of vehicle dynamics/vehicle performance in a F1 environment with a strong knowledge in at least one of the areas of tyre/suspension/Power unit/aerodynamics and ideally more
  • A strong working knowledge of Matlab / Simulink/ Python is an advantage
  • You will need to be highly motivated individual with excellent communication and teamwork sills.  The role is primarily factory based. With the requirement of providing data analysis and support during race events a flexible approach to working hours is essential.
