POSITION SUMMARY:

The Track Grounds Manager participates in the overall maintenance and management of the grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This position is instrumental in the hiring, scheduling, and supervision of the IMS Grounds Staff as well as playing an integral part in the day-to-day operations of the Grounds Department to ensure an aesthetically pleasing and safe environment.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • With the Grounds Superintendent, develop an annual maintenance budget and operating plan.
  • Create and implement employee schedules to ensure quality standards are achieved.
  • Maintain the track grounds in according to set standards.
  • Develop and maintain strategic drainage plan throughout property.
  • Collaborate with Grounds Superintendent and Irrigation Coordinator to schedule watering plan around track activity.
  • Develop and implement a fertility, aeration and Integrated Pest Management program for all turf grass and plant care.
  • Assist project manager with supervision and labor for construction projects.
  • Supervise equipment maintenance and repair operations with the ground’s equipment maintenance team.
  • Ensure maintenance of all appropriate quality and cleanliness standards including but not limited to; employee hygiene, equipment repair and storage areas, chemical and fertilizer storage, receiving, equipment wash, breakroom and bathroom room areas.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal laws, OSHA rules and regulations, relating to chemical and fertilizer storage and disposal, employee safety, public safety, etc.
  • Maintain accurate records pertaining to department activities including but not limited to labor, scheduling, grounds maintenance, construction activities, equipment repair, safety meetings and activities, fertilizer and chemical applications and pest control practices.
  • Supervise grounds hourly staff.
  • Perform other duties as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Including but not limited to: Interviewing, making recommendations to hire, training staff, planning, assigning, directing and evaluating work in progress through completion, appraising performance, disciplinary actions and addressing complaints, resolving problems and approving company paid leave time.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy or related field is preferred

Skills/Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in related field with supervisory experience
  • 5 years’ applicable agronomy experience, preferably in the golf industry
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Valid applicable pesticide license required
  • Demonstrated written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems; efficiently handle multiple duties under pressure with minimal supervision; work flexible hours as required including nights/weekends
  • Positive attitude, professional manner and appearance in all situations

Travel/Work Hours

  • Attend occasional local university field days, continuing educational classes, local and national association conventions
  • Must be able to work overtime, weekends, and holidays

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs., and to lift overhead and push/pull, move lighter objects. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. Employee will frequently work outdoors, which requires physical strength and stamina to endure extreme heat, cold, rain and other conditions.
