As the governing body, Motorsport UK is leading a series of innovations across the entire sport.  As part of this, an exciting opportunity has now arisen for the recruitment of our Technical Director, a key role within the senior management team.  The position will initially be located at Colnbrook, near Heathrow but will be based at our new premises in Bicester, Oxon from Summer 2020.

Motorsport UK represents over 45,000 competitors, officials and volunteers from over 720 clubs.  Since 2018, under the leadership of the chairman David Richards CBE, it is investing in an exciting period of change to drive growth and create a sustainable future for motorsport in the UK.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership for the sport in the UK.  This role leads the continual evolution of the technical rules and regulations for all disciplines, as well as creating innovation for the future of motorsport.

Role Purpose

The successful candidate will:

  • develop innovation technology led solutions to all aspects of the sport including, vehicles, components, events and venues

  • provide strategic direction to the Motorsport UK Board and Executive on Technical policies.  

  • engage fully with the Sport and Safety Director on all matters relating to Safety within the sport, including Risk Assessment and Management.  

  • together, with the Sport and Safety Director investigate serious accidents, make recommendations if necessary, to improve Risk Management procedures at venues, events and/or to safety equipment/vehicles approved by the Motorsport UK.

  • represent Motorsport UK at international and national level on FIA Commissions, Working Groups and other governmental or legislative agencies as required to maintain Motorsport UK's position in leading the way with cutting edge Environmental and Technical policies.  

  • provide an infrastructure for the provision of administrative support to the relevant specialist committees, through the technical, and other panels, with the object of maintaining and improving technical standards in UK motor sport.   

  • will have general management responsibilities, including related budgetary controls.  

Applicant profile

  • an experienced motorsport engineering professional to lead the on-going development of our technical function.

  • to be successful in this role, you will need to have comprehensive knowledge of technical policies, procedures and best practice in motorsport.

  • a clear track record over a suitable period of time showing success in working at a senior level in motorsport, either at a team, manufacturer, component supplier or similar.

Knowledge and Skills

A highly motivated, driven and resilient individual who has proven leadership skills and can demonstrate;

  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills in order to work with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.  

  • applications are invited from candidates with a Degree in Engineering qualification or equivalent as a minimum.  

  • strong and compelling writing skills, good presentation skills and the confidence to explain and sell ideas, whilst over coming challenges.

  • an analytical mind with a meticulous attention to detail

  • You will need to be highly adept with Microsoft Office suite packages.

While the majority of the role is office based, you will be required to attend external client meetings and be fully committed to travel to a number of events and support as required.
