Specialist, Project Management Officer

Purpose of the role:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Management Officer to become a part of our new Programme Management Office. This will be an opportunity to work across all areas of the business with the primary purpose of the role being to take ownership on specific projects as determined by the PMO manager whilst also providing best practices and expertise to our teams in order to successfully deliver these projects.

 

2021 and beyond is a pivotal period for McLaren Racing, we have an ambitious strategy in order to move back to the front of the grid In F1 and to excite & inspire in doing so. This has brought with it a portfolio of strategic projects, initiatives and change programmes which are being delivered to give us competitive advantage. In order to bring these plans to fruition and to achieve maximum benefits the team need support.

 

As this team is a new function, the Project Management Officer role will be vital in supporting the PMO Manager to embed the new team within the business and add value through their own work, building strong relationships as they go. This role will involve collaboration with most areas of the business which includes Formula1, IndyCar (Other Racing series as we enter), People & IT, ESG, Commercial amongst others as required.

 

The role will be varied in its requirements, in some cases you will be required to take on full ownership of a project and deliver this from the early phases of the project – more than likely Definition – through to closure. Whereas in other occasions this may be a more supportive role providing the right framework, knowledge and expertise to educate other members of the team in successful delivery of projects. Due to this, at times the role will involve having multiple projects running concurrently therefore an ability to prioritise, multitask and manage multiple stakeholders at once is critical.

 

In order to provide the wider team with the correct tools to succeed, another key role of the new PMO is to develop and implement standardized templates, robust frameworks and overall improved project governance. The development of these items will be a responsibility for the PMO Manager, but the Project Management officer will play a big part in the creation of these but will more importantly be responsible for taking these new ways of working and put into practice across all projects they are involved in to show value.

 

 

 

Role Dimensions:

This role will report to the Manager, Programme Management Office (PMO manager) as part of a team of three (including this role). The PMO team will report to the Director, Procurement.

 

 

 

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Take a leading role on some aspects of major programmes or all aspects of some projects as required by the PMO Manager
  • Leading projects from concept to completion including defining project timelines, communicating these and monitoring delivery adherence as the project progresses
  • Tracking of Project financial performance to budget, including any implications under the cost cap regulations particularly when working with Capital expenditure projects – this will involve close working with F1-Finance team
  • External supplier management, working closely with Procurement team to negotiate the best commercial terms throughout the projects
  • Succinctly and accurately reporting project status on a regular basis and providing updates into the PMO Manager to allow for holistic reporting of all programmes
  • Manage and escalate Project risks/issues to the PMO Manager as required
  • Conducting or supporting with Lessons learned exercises upon completion of projects, documenting key actions from these reviews and escalating to PMO Manager as required
  • Support PMO Manager in the development of new Programme/Project governance frameworks to be applied across all work that is undertaken within the PMO
  • Support PMO Manager in the development of new Project documentation – including scoping documents, business cases, timelines, risk logs etc. to provide consistency throughout the business
  • Support PMO Manager in the development of new reporting templates to be used as standard across McLaren Racing
  • Implementation of newly created Project documentation/framework/templates across all projects
  • Work closely with the Project Administrator across all projects, using time effectively to ensure all requirements are covered for all projects involved in

Job requirements

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Previous experience of successfully delivering complex projects – Essential
  • PRINCE2 / APM or other equivalent qualification – Essential
  • Proficient in MS Project/Project management tools – Essential
  • Understanding of commercial basics, ability to track project spend and report on spend v budget – Essential
  • Risk management, mitigation and escalation experience – Essential
  • Ability to report project updates succinctly and accurately for a variety of audiences – including RAG status, monthly progress etc.
  • Previous experience of implementing standard practices, templates and frameworks – Desirable
  • Ability to build strong relationships with a variety of stakeholders across all levels of the business – Essential
