Sensor Development Engineer

The company:

Williams is one of the world’s leading Formula 1 teams. It exists purely to race in the top echelon of motor racing, where it has been winning grand Prix’s for more than three decades. The Williams name has been synonymous with top-level motorsport since the 1960s.

The position:

Reporting to the Lead Engineer for Electronics and Sensors, part of a small team within the Systems Engineering Department with responsibility for the specification, development and supply of sensors for control and data gathering purposes on the Williams F1 racing car.

Operational Duties:

  • Liaise with engineers throughout the company to understand the requirements of a specific sensor installation.
  • Specify, research and identify sensors suitable for each application.
  • Design and develop sensor solutions from scratch.
  • Work with external suppliers to adapt existing designs to Williams F1 requirements.
  • Devise validation and calibration plans to verify performance and guarantee accuracy.
  • Investigate, diagnose and rectify problems with in service sensor installations.
  • In addition to the sensors themselves, it is often necessary to develop suitable electrical interfaces, harnessing and test equipment.

Other credentials:

The ideal person for the role will be have a good understanding of electronic and mechanical engineering principles and practices, excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach.
