Purpose of the Role:
Key task of the role is to design, develop and use innovative electro-mechanical systems for the WT, test rigs and race car including data processing and analysis. The work focuses especially on Aerodynamic development and experimentation.
Role Dimensions:
- Sits within the Racing Technology department.
- Close cooperation with other engineers and designers in the team, also with aerodynamicists, modelmakers and production staff.
- Regular support of wind tunnel and trackside operations i.e. travel and work outside UK.
- Potential work beyond standard working hours and on weekends.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Conceptual layout and development of prototype and experimental electro-mechanical systems, according to a brief and in cooperation with electronic, control and software engineers.
- Design of experiments and experimental equipment for use in wind tunnel, on rigs and race track.
- Plan, perform and supervise experiments in WT, on test rigs and race track.
- Design of components and assemblies in CATIA V5 including:
- use of FEA and Kinematic tools.
- good quality detail and assembly drawings that have all the required data for manufacture and assembly.
- Processing, analysis and reporting of experimental data and results:
- Development of data processing and visualization tools, together with the software team.
- Detailed analysis of data, drawing conclusions and suggesting further work.
- Preparation of detailed reports and presentations.
- Responsible for complete projects, fit for purpose, from brief and concept phase to final commissioning and reporting.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
Essential
- Relevant engineering and design experience within Formula 1, automotive, aerospace or similar engineering industry.
- Experience of experimental engineering and prototyping work in an R&D environment – designing and conducting an experiment, sensors, data acquisition and analysis etc.
- Knowledge of electro-mechanical systems and control strategies.
- Degree in Mechanical / Automotive / Aeronautical or similar engineering / science / maths-based discipline.
- CAD (ideally CATIA V5) - Part design, surface design, draughting, assembly design.
- Advanced PC skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power point).
Desirable
- GD&T Geometric tolerances, Kinematics, FEA and strength calculations.
- Production techniques (Machining, Fabrication, casting, rapid prototyping).
- Design database management VPM / 3DCOM.
- Experience in electronics, control systems, functionality and limitations of measurement devices, and / or coding for data analysis (including Matlab) would be beneficial.
