Prototype and Test Technician

Williams is one of the world’s most established Formula 1 teams. It exists purely to race in the top echelon of motor racing, where it has been winning Grands Prix for more than three decades. The Williams name has been synonymous with top-level Motorsport since the 1960s.

The position:

We are currently seeking a Prototype and Test Technician to join the Test Cell area of our Research and Development Test department. This part of the department provides factory-based testing and support of Williams Advanced Engineering for new and existing projects, with an emphasis on the testing of hybrid powertrains and energy storage systems.

The role:

Reporting to the Research and Development Test Cell Manager, you will primarily be part of a team of technicians working on a variety of different dynos and projects, for example:

The testing of high-speed dynos for electric motor and gearbox testing.
Developing and testing prototype high voltage automotive batteries.
Testing and analysing the performance of single battery cells and modules.
Maintenance of all test rigs.

The work in the department is very varied and changes constantly therefore you will need to be adaptable to suit the project at hand, helping to create new rigs and rig installations as necessary. Some foreign travel may be required depending on the project being worked on. You may also be called upon to support electronics and testing activities in other areas of the department when required.

Person specification

The ideal candidates will have knowledge of electric vehicles and will ideally be educated to an HNC/HND or degree level. As the role is varied you will require a wide range of skills including:

All-round practical skills for the building of test components and test rigs.
Wiring skills for the construction of looms for the test cells and test rigs.
Ability to diagnose issues with rigs, test equipment and automotive components.
Ability to be quick thinking and work unsupervised using your own initiative.

You will ideally have some experience of dyno testing and a familiarity with data logging software packages such as Atlas and CANalyzer & System Monitor. You will be expected to undergo training to deal with high voltage electronics and the use of a defibrillator.
