Principal Research Engineer

Duties / Responsibilities (Including Objectives of the role)

The purpose of this role is to lead one of the teams responsible for research projects from idea generation up to delivery team handover maturity. The successful applicant will beresponsible for:

  • Initialising and progressing research projects in line with Lotus research framework and timing targets.
  •  Establishing and maintaining strategic industrial and academic partnerships.
  • Planning future projects including resource and funding requirements.
  • Growing the research team in line with expanding demand for output.
  • Successfully realising external funding opportunities for individual and collaborative projects.
  • Maintaining agreed resource balancing between internal teams.
  • Developing key internal capabilities to underpin the development of future powertrain solutions.

Qualifications and Experience (Essential & Desirable criteria)

Essential 

  • Qualified to Degree level having achieved 2.1 in a relevant subject.
  • Previous experience of managing a multidisciplinary team
  • Extensive experience of working with automotive propulsion systems.
  • Extensive experience of working with electrified vehicles.
  • Extensive experience of working within automotive technology development frameworks.
  • Experience of managing collaborative research projects with external industrial and academic partners.
  • Experience of working with the individual subsystems that comprise an EV propulsion system
  • Experience of working with a variety of CAE tools to deliver high quality virtual assessment data & optimisation.
  • Experience of automotive FMA tools and processes.
  • Experience of requirement generation and management.

Desirable

  • Experience of system development to meet EMC targets
  • Experience of automotive software development and process implementation
  • Experience of robust and efficient validation processes and optimisation 
  • Experience/knowledge of manufacturing both conventional and advanced.
  • Knowledge of materials/components and processing relevant to future propulsion systems.
