Optical Tracking Technician

NASCAR Event Management seeks a talented professional to join in the position of Optical Tracking Technician. This will be a field based position and travel to race events will be required.

THIS IS A FIELD/REMOTE POSITION THAT TRAVELS TO RACE EVENTS ACROSS THE U.S.

The Optical Tracking Technician is responsible for technical support and installation of the Car Tracking system for NASCAR race events at NASCAR Venues and work with the inter-departmental team on implementation of new technologies. Provides technical support to employees in relation to the Car tracking system and related technologies

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Facilitate the weekly on-site installation, rigging and maintenance of the car tracking system and underlining components such as, cameras, network switches and UPSs. Installs, configures, tests, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs car tracking hardware/software issues to include the following: fiber, ethernet, network switches, computers, tablets, cameras, and competition officiating technology platforms.

  • Ensures all standard operating procedures are followed and that all major outages are escalated immediately to the Lead Optical Tracking System Administrator. 

  • Assists with handling race official and end user support requests at race events and works with the Event Technology and Productions department to help resolve trackside issues.

  • Provide tier 1 technical support for the project cameras and equipment that may not be connected properly.

  • Utilize best practices for mounting and powering equipment at each location and using a video monitor to site in each camera providing the necessary view needed.

  • Distribution and setup of needed field equipment to provide connectivity from each camera and switch back to the mobile datacenter.

  • Repair cables and other equipment as needed.

  • Safely use ladders and operate scissor and bucket lifts.

  • Ensure equipment is properly disassembled and packed after each race to be securely transported to the next location.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university and a minimum of two (2) years related experience in a Live Media and Entertainment environment with a focus of technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience with implementation of software-based media solutions deployed on IT/commodity hardware running on various platforms (e.g. Linux, Windows, Serverless).

  • Working knowledge of high performance, IT based hardware technology used within the venue or stadium systems environment

  • Knowledge of camera equipment infrastructure, network switches and UPSs.

  • General Knowledge of Computer Vision and Machine Learning techniques.

  • Working Knowledge of Python, BASH, or PowerShell scripting.

  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.

  • Making Decisions and Solving Problems — analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.

  • Organizing, Planning, and Prioritizing Work — Developing specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work

  • Ability to use hand tools of the trade correctly and safely, including multi-meters, screwdrivers, wire cutters and soldering irons.

  • Ability to climb ladders, grandstands and track roof areas

  • Proficient in Network Administration and Signal Distribution

  • Experience with Wired, RF, and Fiber Optic Cable.

  • Ability to travel up to 95% including weekends
