Mathematical Modeler

The Company:

The Position:

We are looking to enhance our Vehicle Science department at our Race Team Hub in Banbury, UK. This is a fast-paced and challenging opportunity for a team-oriented Mathematical modeler to make a substantial impact within a small team.

General Summary:

Reporting to the Head of Vehicle Science or their designee, and part of the Vehicle Science Group based in Banbury (UK). Responsible for the development of mathematical models, advanced algorithms and solvers, with a firm focus on car performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Promote teamwork and effective communications to develop working relationships between all personnel and departments.
  • Work with vehicle dynamics engineers to develop an in-depth understanding of vehicle systems, guide development of the team’s modelling tools and validation processes
  • Improve the group’s predictive capability, help identify overall performance strengths and limitations and guide car design and trackside operations, short and long term.
  • Conduct research to identify improvements in physics modelling and analysis approaches.
  • Propose novel mathematical or computing approaches to balance competing requirements such as accuracy, stability, solve time and determinism for real-time deployments.
  • Work with engineers to ensure simulations correctly model the effects they consider may be important, and to assess creative car development ideas in simulation.
  • Adhere to all engineering and wider business processes.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of Vehicle Performance.
  • Follow all safety regulations in all venues.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of Vehicle Science or their designee.

Education and Work Experience:

  • Minimum BSc in Mathematics, Computational Mechanics or another STEM subject, but with substantial experience in applied mathematics (e.g. physics, differential-algebraic equations (DAEs), linear and non-linear systems/solvers).
  • MSc/PhD preferred. Experience in motor racing, or in mainstream an automotive vehicle dynamics/simulation/control function is desirable. 
  • Prior experience in high level motor racing (ideally Formula One, Formula E or WEC) would be beneficial.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • A robust technical background in applied mathematics, physics or engineering, ideally around automotive/aeronautical/racing applications.
  • Work to a consistently high standard in stressful and time sensitive situations, whilst prioritizing and managing the workload efficiently.
  • Work well in a team environment with personnel at all levels.

Equipment and Applications:

  • Solid computer knowledge, preferred experience in Microsoft Office products and Microsoft Dynamics AX, C#, C/C++, MATLAB, Physical Modelling (e.g. Modelica, SimScape).

Work Environment Physical Demands:

An ability to work and prioritize within a high pressure, time sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential. The role may require occasional domestic and international ravel and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends.

This position may require lifting to 50 pounds, repeated bending, squatting and manual dexterity. Fast-paced work environment requiring heavy mental demands. Work environment includes machinery, race cars, 7-post and other rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids.
