Materials Test Engineer

For many fans of Formula One, the sport exists between lights and chequered flag on a Sunday afternoon. It begins and ends with the exploits of the drivers on the track. But this is merely the tip of the spear. The reality of modern F1 is that of a complex and intertwined operation, every part of which needs to perform near its limit if success is to be achieved. From the pit crew searching for the ultimate repeatable pit stop, to the inspiration of the designers, the application of engineers and the herculean efforts of an army of fabricators and machinists. Much of our success is thanks to the diversity of thought and spectrum of skill sets held within the team, our ability to recognise unique contributions from individual team members is just a part of why we love what we do.

Job Description

We have an opportunity for an enthusiastic Materials Engineer working from our Milton Keynes campus. Our mission is to develop championship winning Formula 1 race cars with your help, working as part of our Composite R&D and Materials Group to support the design, development, manufacture and operation of our race cars and continue the team’s success.

We want to work with people who are passionate about winning and who want to use their talents to deliver performance on the racetrack. This is an opportunity for you to make a significant contribution by working closely with the design, production and quality departments on a wide range of material projects, therefore a broad knowledge of materials technology is essential.

Your Impact: -

  • Improving the performance and reliability of the car by introducing new exploitable material technology.
  • Generation of material data for use by design, which will involve design and manufacture of samples and conducting relevant tests.
  • Assist design in the selection of materials and their use.
  • Assist manufacturing and inspection departments in the event of production issues associated with material processing.
  • Analysis of failed components to determine root cause and advise on changes to improve reliability.

You will: -

  • Be educated to degree level or equivalent, ideally within Materials Engineering or similar.
  • Be able to work independently and manage your own workloads and projects to meet strict deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Have knowledge of manufacturing techniques, material processing (such as heat treatment and coatings) and standard testing procedures.
  • Be able to demonstrate practical experience in a material science laboratory and know how to operate standard testing equipment.
  • Have previous experience of analysing and reporting on material failures.
  • Possess the ability to analyse data to determine conclusions and make recommendations.
  • Be confident of writing clear, concise technical reports.
  • Be able communicate effectively and build relationships with colleagues and external suppliers.

Not only is this a fantastic Materials Engineer role, but it is also a fantastic team to work with here at Red Bull Racing. A good salary is just the start, there are many other benefits too such as our bonus scheme, private health care cover, life assurance scheme, workplace nursery, company contributed pension scheme, on site gym & fitness classes, free food, and a cycle to work scheme; but above all, the job satisfaction doesn’t get any better than the feeling of making a real contribution to the function of our grand prix cars.
