Lead Aerodynamics Designer

Purpose of the Role:

This role involves the day to day management of all surfacing tasks for a large area of the car (or the entire car), with the aim of delivering high quality and legal surfaces to CFD, Aero Design and final release to the race car.

Role Dimensions:

  • Sits within the Aero Design Team, which is responsible for all design of surfaces and components for the Aero Dept.

  • Specifically, leads an Aero Design – Surfacing group, who are responsible for providing surfaces to CFD, Model Design and the Vehicle Engineering teams.

  • Reports to the Team Leader – Aero Design, and will involve close cooperation with the rest of the Aero Design team, the Vehicle Engineering team, and the WT and CFD Aerodynamicists.

  • This role is factory based but may involve occasional travel to our wind tunnel facility.

  • This role is predominantly carried out during standard working hours, but will sometimes include additional hours and weekends.

Key Relationships:

Team Leader – Aero Design, Principal Aerodynamicist and Project Leaders for the area of the car, and other Aero designers and Aerodynamicists.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Working closely with Principal Aerodynamicists to plan their surfacing requirements – taking into account their tasklist, scope of jobs etc, reviewing the resource available, and giving feedback on feasibility, schedules etc. This includes feeding back to the Principals if this info is not timely or complete, reporting concerns to the Team Leader – Aero Design.

  • Co-ordination of the resource within the group to meet the agreed requirements – allocating work, prioritising, setting deadlines, supervising, progress checking, etc.

  • Feedback to the Principal Aeros and Team Leader – Aero Design in the event that the tasks become “at risk”.

  • Liaison with main customers (Aeros, CFD engineers, model designers and Vehicle Engineering designers) to understand the technical requirements for the surfaces which are delivered to them.

  • Directly, and by delegating to Snr Designers and Designers who are the “expert” for a given area, checking and releasing all surfaces to Vehicle Engineering, ensuring they are on time, legal, respect packaging constraints, and are of good quality.

  • Together with the Team Leader – Aero Design, ensuring (through training, CAD techniques, procedures etc as well as personal supervision and checking) that the surfaces delivered meet the requirement of the Aerodynamicists / CFD engineers, are of the expected quality, are legal and respect full size packaging constraints.

  • Together with the Team Leader – Aero Design, proposing, developing, implementing and documenting improvements to CAD methodologies, surfacing tools and processes to improve the efficiency, quality and functionality of surface design throughout the aero development process.

  • Together with the Team Leader – Aero Design, providing guidance and training to help team members to follow the department’s chosen surfacing methodologies.

  • Together with the Principal Aeros, working closely with the Vehicle Engineering designers to ensure an efficient and slick design process from Aero concept through to full size design (concepts will often be worked on in both areas in parallel or in so good communication is key).

  • Point of contact for Vehicle Engineering surfacing queries.

  • Together with the Principal Aeros, working closely with the Model Designers to ensure an efficient and slick design delivery process through to release of a model part (concepts will often be worked on in both areas in parallel or in quick succession so good communication is key).

  • Point of contact for Model Design surfacing queries.

  • Together with the Lead Designers – Model Design, Team Leader – Aero Design, work together to allocate shared design resources across the design team as required by the workload at any given time.

  • Surface design of key projects where required.

Knowledge, skills & Experience:

Essential

  • Extensive Formula One aerodynamics surface design experience using CATIA V5.

  • Thorough knowledge of the latest Formula One technical regulations.

  • Understanding of Formula One race car mechanical systems and layout.

  • Proficient with MS Office.

Desirable

  • Experience using the 3DCOM product management database.

  • Degree in Mechanical / Automotive / Aeronautical engineering discipline.

  • Experience of managing multiple simultaneous projects.

Personal Attributes:

  • Team player with strong interpersonal, communication and leadership skills.

  • Well organized - able to allocate own and others’ time effectively and to balance multiple demands, often with limited information and ever-changing priorities.

  • Desire to improve how things are done; pro-activity and initiative to make this happen.

  • Highly self-motivated and able to work autonomously under pressure and to tight deadlines.

  • Thorough worker with good attention to detail.

  • Results focused and driven to achieve successful outcome.
