IMS Sign Shop Technician

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Sign Shop Technician is responsible for producing and installing vinyl graphics and rigid signage around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and surrounding properties. The Technician will also assist in the printing of signage and creation of print ready files using computer programs to generate or recreate logos, text, and other graphics.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Installs vinyl graphics on various surfaces (Vehicle, Metal, Plastic, Wood)
  • Installs outdoor and indoor signage and creates structures for support of such signage
  • Prints logos or designs on vinyl by use of specialized sign equipment and computer programs
  • Measures specific dimensions for sign placement and/or design size - either during creation of designs or on site of where installation will occur
  • Uses computer programs to generate or recreate logos, text, and other graphic designs
  • Reads work order or receives instruction from supervisor regarding specific tasks assigned
  • Cuts material for installation of design (plastic, wood, metal or other) using handsaws, table saws and/or other equipment
  • Cuts material either by hand or plotting devices to create vinyl and other materials in certain shapes or patterns to be incorporated for specific signage or design application
  • Uses ladders and/or lifts to apply and install signage in some situations
  • Cleans and/or prepares surfaces of objects or materials that will receive such signage and or designs, using cleaning chemicals and other methods
  • Removes old or outdated signage from existing structures and/or objects
  • Maintains and keep all equipment clean and up to date
  • Work with outside vendors and/or technicians responsible for providing equipment and/or supplies for all areas of related work
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor. The Facilities Department is responsible for the entirety of the grounds and buildings at IMS. Due to the sometime-unpredictable nature of being a multi-event facility, all members of the Facilities team may be required to occasionally help with responsibilities outside their normal job description.

Education

  • High school graduate or GED, or equivalent experience

Skills/Experience

  • Minimum three years’ experience required installing and making various types of signage
  • Vehicle graphics installation experience
  • Computer experience, knowledge of sign industry
  • Knowledge of the following programs preferred: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Flexi sign, Flexi Print, Rip Software
  • General mathematic skills such as reading of measuring devices, decimal conversion of inches, cost figuring, figuring square feet or area at a high school graduate level
  • High integrity and confidentiality with strong people skills
  • Innovative thinker and self-starter

Travel/Work Hours

  • No travel required. Must be able to work overtime and weekends as needed.
  • Required ability to work long hours, evenings, weekends & holidays during entire event season.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The ability to lift up to 50lbs
  • Constant standing, walking, stooping, kneeling and repeated bending
  • Constant reaching high/low/level and repetitive twisting or pressure involving wrists or hands
  • Frequent use of ladders/scaffold/lifts
  • Specific vision abilities include distinguishing basic shades and colors

  • The employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. It is required that the employee wear an IMS supplied respirator
  • The noise level in the work environment can be loud, due to professional racing events
