POSITION SUMMARY:

The role of the Carpenter is to construct, install, layout, maintain, repair, and replace general building construction, fittings, and hardware; including, but not limited to cabinetry, ceilings, doors, flooring, framing, furniture, locksets, masonry, shelving, stairs, walls, and windows. Projects and tasks should conform to all local and state building codes, for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and surrounding properties.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Provides support for all facility activities and events.
  • Constructs, installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces general building construction, fittings, and hardware conforming to all local and state building codes.
  • Gathers information from blueprints, diagrams, or schematics.
  • Selects appropriate material(s) and procures material(s) for assigned project/task.
  • Utilizes a wide variety of hand and power tools to drill, level, measure, nail, and saw building materials.
  • Constructs, installs, layout, maintains, repairs, and replaces; including, but not limited to cabinetry, ceilings, doors, flooring, framing, furniture, locksets, masonry, shelving, stairs, walls, and windows.
  • Erects and dismantles decking, platforms, risers, scaffolding, and staging.
  • Modifies existing and temporary seating structures.
  • Install or remove brackets/fixtures; including, but not limited to office furnishings, TV’s, and signs.
  • Responsible for maintaining clean equipment, shop, work areas, and work truck.
  • Work with clients, sanctioning bodies, and staff throughout the facility, in a calm and collective manner, to solve issues and problems that arise during high pressure situations.
  • Supports track conversion operations; including, but not limited to barriers, belting, brake markers, tarping, and tires.
  • Other duties as assigned by Foreman or Management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • None.

Education

  • High School Graduate or GED.
  • Mathematics skills at the high school graduate level.

Skills/Experience

  • Valid driver's license is required. Valid CDL is preferred.
  • Certifications for door hardware installation and repair preferred. Experience in lieu of certifications will be considered.
  • Prior experience with commercial concrete demoing, forming, prepping, pouring, and finishing required.
  • Heavy Equipment certifications preferred (i.e. Boom Lift, Forklift, Scissor Lift, etc.).
  • Prior experience with commercial roofing systems preferred.
  • Prior experience with welding equipment preferred.
  • Basic knowledge and use of Microsoft Office/Outlook.
  • Innovative thinker and self-starter.
  • Effective communication and people skills.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials and safety precautions for the profession.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.

Travel/Work Hours

  • No travel required.
  • Must be able to work long hours, overtime and weekends based on event schedule and workload.
  • Flexibility is key for this position.
  • Typical facilities hours are Monday to Friday, 7:15am-4:00pm.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will frequently work outdoors, which requires physical stamina to endure the extreme cold, heat, rain, or wind. Work on-site may be dirty, dusty, muddy, and/or noisy. Carpenters may also have to work in confined spaces and at heights. The employee may be exposed to airborne particles, fumes, or hazardous materials. PPE will be required.
