Head of Manufacturing; Fabrication and Assembly

Duties / Responsibilities (Including Objectives of the role):

Job Summary

The job holder is responsible and accountable for the new Norwich manufacturing facility which will provide chassis to the assembly line in Hethel.

A complex business unit transforming raw material into finished assemblies, including stamping, bending, welding, machining, assembly and quality control activities.

For the right candidate, the opportunity to develop a brown field site into a state of the art machining and assembly facility and to build and develop a team capable of producing a quality finished product.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Be a key member of the project team who set up our new manufacturing facility focusing on 3 of the 4M's:
  • Man: oversee the transfer of some existing staff, responsible for the recruitment of new staff, organise the induction/on-boarding and technical training of the newly combined workforce
  • Machine: supporting with the transfer of existing machinery and implementation of new machinery on site, ensuring that the flow of material across the facility is efficient
  • Method: work with Manufacturing Engineering to ensure that processes are relevant, documented and adhered to
  • Leadership of up to 175 skilled employees
  • Design and implementation of best practice process and procedures, maximising the investment return into this brownfield site.
  • Ensure finished parts are fabricated and assembled to exacting standards, whilst maintaining a relentless approach to cost efficiency and productivity
  • Produce fully approved parts, respond quickly to issues and concerns, act as an advisor for future engineering change and continuously seek improvements to cost and efficiency  
  • Ensure stock levels of raw materials, WIP and finished goods are managed to minimise capital employment whist servicing just in time demands of Hethel manufacturing
  • Organise, control and authorise expenditure and costs to achieve business plan cost targets
  • Ensure compliance to H&S legislation whilst striving for best in class safety performance
  • Develop future generations of skilled employees
  • Manage staff in line with Company policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Respond positively to people concerns and issues, involving Staff Council where appropriate
  • Generation of reports/presentations as required 

Qualifications and Experience (Essential & Desirable criteria)

Essential criteria 

  • Engineering/Manufacturing qualification
  • Manufacturing experience
  • PC literate
  • Management of an offsite manufacturing facility
  •  Good organisation skills
  • Self-motivated achiever
  • Ability to occasionally work weekends and late day shifts as required

Desirable 

  • Degree / MBA, /HNC Mechanical & Production Engineering or equivalent qualifications
  • Body/Fabrication/Stamping/Machining manufacturing experience ideally in an Automotive environment
  • Autocad and MS Project experience
  • Automotive, Light engineering, aerospace or military equivalent
