Control Systems Engineer - Launch Performance

Purpose of the Role:

The purpose of the role is to lead all the activities aimed at maximising the race launch performance, being those HW and SW development, as well as test planning and data analysis.

Role Dimensions:

The role will involve leadership of activities aimed at developing and delivering optimal and consistent race launch performance through simulation, data analysis, hardware and software development, driver training.

As the leader of the project you will be responsible for coordinating and driving development in different areas of competence, with overall understanding of car systems and their controls, as well as drivers feedback on operability of controls, being fundamental in successful execution of the task.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Overall responsibility for the development of race launches
  • Develop close working relationships with other key groups within McLaren Racing (e.g. Race Engineering, Vehicle Performance, Transmission design, Simulator)
  • Definition and coordination of activities in areas such as:
    • Simulation, including sensitivity analysis
    • Clutch development
    • Control strategies
    • Driver ergonomics
    • Driver training
    • Data analysis
  • Definition of test plans, including both factory and track activities
  • Development and management of configuration and analysis tools
  • Delivery of procedures and strategies to Trackside Control Systems
  • Race weekend support, factory based

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

Essential

  • A degree or postgraduate qualification in Mechanical, Mechatronics or other relevant Engineering discipline
  • Strong overall understanding of car systems and their development process, including design, modelling, control and testing
  • Sound knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink
  • Knowledge of System Monitor and ATLAS or similar calibration and data viewing tools in Motorsport
  • Track record in Formula 1 or equivalent professional motorsport category
