CNC Machinist/Programmer

POSITION SUMMARY

While utilizing Computer Numerically Controlled machinery, operators are responsible for cutting, drilling, shaping and finishing parts and components.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Measure dimensions of finished workpieces to ensure conformance to specifications, using precision measuring instruments, templates, and fixtures.
  • Mount, install, align, and secure tools, attachments, fixtures, and workpieces on machines, using hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
  • Listen to machines during operation to detect sounds such as those made by dull cutting tools or excessive vibration and adjust machines to compensate for problems.
  • Adjust machine feed and speed, change cutting tools, or adjust machine controls when automatic programming is faulty or if machines malfunction.
  • Stop machines to remove finished workpieces or to change tooling, setup, or workpiece placement, according to required machining sequences.
  • Check to ensure that workpieces are properly lubricated and cooled during machine operation.
  • Input initial part dimensions into machine control panels.
  • Confer with supervisors or programmers to resolve machine malfunctions or production errors or to obtain approval to continue production.
  • Monitor machine operation and control panel displays and compare readings to specifications to detect malfunctions.
  • Clean machines, tooling, or parts, using solvents or solutions and rags. Also responsible for cleaning the shop and ensuring safe housekeeping on an on-going basis.
  • Read, interpret, and may program CNC machines with data from technical drawings or specifications.
  • Calculates dimensions and tolerance using knowledge of mathematics and instruments.
  • Set, monitor, and modify tolerance levels and cutting speeds to product the component or part to specification.
  • Inspect produced components or parts to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • Must be able to use tools, such as lathes, mills, cutters, and grinders as needed, to perform required requested work.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED): Required

Experience: 1 plus years of experience

Computer Skills: Basic Computer Skills required. Strong verbal and written communication skills required. Prefer CAD skills or experience with similar software programs.

Certifications & Licenses: Certificate in Machining or a related discipline preferred.

Other Requirements: Must be able to work a flexible schedule as needed. Must be a team player and effectively utilize strong communication skills with others in the department and organization. Extensive knowledge of hand tools, drill press, grinders, and other machine shop equipment is required.
