CFD Early Stage Researcher

Role description:

Stability and Sensitivity Methods for Flow Control and Industrial Design (SSECOID) is an Innovative Training Network (ITN) funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under the grant agreement No 955923.

SSECOID consists of 11 host institutions (employing Early Stage Researchers) and 4 partner organizations (offering secondments and training) from seven different countries (Spain, UK, France, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, United States), and from both sectors - academic and industrial.

Early Stage Researchers (ESR) employed within the project will undertake individual research projects leading to a PhD degree - awarded by the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College London - and benefit from the training network. McLaren Racing Ltd offers two fixed-term (3 years) ESR positions:

  • ESR11 High Fidelity simulations of open wheel geometries using high order methods
  • ESR12 Wall modelling for high order LES simulations, application to the transitional flow around a Formula 1 front wing.

The work place will be part time at Imperial College London, in the Aeronautics Department, and the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) in Woking. Short secondments to network partners are also to be expected.

Role Dimensions:

  • Develop novel techniques and implement them in an Industrial framework and work towards the adoption of higher fidelity CFD tools.
  • Provide technological watch of emerging techniques from Academia in general and other ongoing Research within the ITN which could be applicable to our design process.

Key Relationships:

  • Research group at Imperial College London
  • CFD Methodology and HPC team at MTC.
  • ESR and Researchers from the Innovative Training Network
  • Correlation and Software Development teams at MTC eventually involved in the projects.

Job requirements

Principal Accountabilities:

  • First and foremost, you will need to reach the different Academic milestones on your way to obtaining your PhD degree.
  • Contribute to the success of the SSECOID project (publications and knowledge transfers).
  • Evaluate and develop state-of-the-art high-fidelity CFD tools in the context of Formula 1 Aerodynamics.
  • Help with the adoption of such tools in a production environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

Strong mathematical background, in particular linear algebra, partial differential equations and Finite element/high order numerical methods. Experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics, numerical methods, development and use of simulation tools and programming languages (C++, python) is highly desirable. An interest in Race car Aerodynamics would also be favourable.

Personal Attributes:

  • A team player but with the initiative to make own decisions and work with minimal supervision.
  • Self-starter, able to identify requirements independently, then make proposals for solutions.
  • Highly driven and ready to go beyond what is expected at every opportunity.
  • Excellent communication skills to target a variety of audiences.
  • The ability to influence and embed knowledge to other members of the team.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and analytical approach, with attention to detail.
  • Open mindedness to ensure high flexibility and the capacity to manage rapid and profound changes of scopes, development directions and processes.
  • Aptitude to learn from others and share knowledge with others.

Eligibility:

Candidates can be of any nationality. The candidate must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies) in the United Kingdom for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date.

Applicants must be in their first 4 years of their research career and have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree. The 4 years are counted from the date a degree, which formally entitles to embark on a doctorate, was obtained.

Benefits:

The students will be employed for 36 months by McLaren Racing. The salary level will be according to Marie Curie Skłodowska call rules, including family allowance (when applicable). All contracts will include Social Security coverage and benefits according to national laws.

All employees must ensure compliance with the Company Health and Safety Policy, and all relevant other statutory Health and Safety legislation.

This job description may not detail some additional duties allocated to the post holder, nor cover duties of a similar nature, commensurate with the role, which may from time to time be reasonably required by the relevant manager.
